West University Place

West University Place is an affluent community situated between Highway 59 and the 610 Loop. Popularly known as West University or West U for short, the charming tree-lined streets surrounding Rice University comprise one of Houston’s most sought-after neighborhoods.

West University Place is home to around 15,000 residents and boasts a range of amenities and activities. The nearby pedestrian-friendly Rice Village Shopping Center offers an eclectic mix of established brands and unique boutiques. There are numerous parks throughout the community and a fantastic range of public schools.

West University Place was traditionally home to mid-20th Century bungalows and cottages, though most of these have since been replaced by newer builds. Elegant Georgian-style homes are particularly popular, although the community contains a variety of architectural styles.

Among West U’s most desirable homes are numerous exquisite custom-built architectural masterpieces. Each of these luxurious multi-million-dollar properties has a style of its own, with sprawling grounds and incredibly spacious interiors. These extravagant homes showcase exceptional attention to detail, offering the very best in luxury living. Expect pools, gourmet kitchens, and unique features such as indoor rock climbing gyms.

The average lot size in West U is around 5000 square foot. There are properties available at more than double this size, with the most opulent residences extending beyond 20,000 square foot.

Sports are a big part of life in welcoming West U. The area is home to stars from numerous Houston franchises, including retired Houston Astros legend Craig Biggio, current Houston Texans linebacker Brian Cushing, and current Team USA and former Houston Rockets basketball coach Jeff Van Gundy.

West University Little League is the largest little league baseball group in the United States, with around 1,200 members. This much-loved community institution is something West U residents are rightfully proud of. In 2005, former First Lady Barbara Bush threw out the Little League’s opening day first pitch.

West University Place is within walking distance of Rice Village, which boasts an impressive selection of more than 300 shops. Rice Village is also home to a dizzying area of restaurants serving outstanding international cuisine.
